Verify the debt first
Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act you can request validation of a debt. Check that the amount, the original creditor and the dates are right before paying anything.
Your options
- If it’s inaccurate, dispute it with the bureaus and the collector.
- If it’s valid, you can pay in full or negotiate a settlement. Get any agreement in writing.
- Some newer scoring models ignore paid collections and treat medical collections differently.
Rebuild around it
Collections can stay on your report for up to seven years from the original delinquency, but on-time payments and low utilization steadily outweigh them.
